Green recycling bins being distributed in OKC

OKLAHOMA CITY – If you are an Oklahoma City resident and have city trash and recycling services, your residence has likely witnessed the arrival of a large, green recycling cart, meant to replace the “little blue bin” that the city has used for years.

But just because your home has welcomed the green cart, which is nearly identical to the blue trash bins already in use, that does not mean it is time to put your approved recyclables in it.

Do not make that mistake, said Jennifer McClintock, spokesperson for OKC’s Utilities Department.

Why? Because the city is transitioning from the blue bins to the green carts and it takes time. So, just put your green cart beside your blue trash carts until July, when it will be announced that the city is picking up recyclables in the new, green cart. These have lids, to prevent items blowing away in the Oklahoma breeze. Also, they will accept cardboard and glass in addition to paper and plastic as usual.

McClintock confirmed that despite utilizing social media and sending out mailers about the new carts, people have contacted the Utilities Department wanting to know why the city had not emptied out their green carts. And while the city recommended the company in charge of the green carts put tags on them to remind people who may have overlooked the notices, the company opted not to do it, in order to save money and time.

As McClintock told Red Dirt Report, the crews will not empty the new, green carts until the new program start date in July. When asked what to do with the old, blue bins, McClintock said she was thinking of using hers as a planter. Or you can store items in them. Just get creative, if you wish!

  • Now - May 31: Cart delivery to 195,000 households
  • June 1: "Little Blue" bin program discontinued.
  • All recycling services will be suspended through the month of June.
  • July: New recycling service begins. Pick-up will be every other week. We will notify customers of their new recycling dates in their water bill, via postcard and at
