BOOK REIVEW: Method and Madness: The Hidden Story of Israel’s Assaults on Gaza by Norman G. Finkelstein (OR Books) 2014

Just looking at the titles of the six chapters in Norman G. Finkelstein’s book Method and Madness – “Peace Offensive,” “Punish, Humiliate and Terrorize,” “We Know a Lot More Today,” “Dangerous and Reckless Act,” “Go Ahead, Invade,” and “Israel Has a Right To Defend Itself,” -  you know right off the bat you are about to read some hard-hitting truth-telling.

And with Finkelstein, a principled analyst of  Israel’s ongoing terror program against the people of Gaza, in this 236-page book we are offered a series of essays and commentary examining Israel’s “three massacres in Gaza” since 2008. This includes Operation Cast Lead (2008-09), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012) and Operation Protective Edge (2014).  He also examines, in detail, the horrific and bungled attack on the Turkish humanitarian ship Mavi Marmara in the Mediterranean Sea by cutthroat Israeli commandos who would murder 9 foreign nationals who happened to be aboard. The ship’s mission? Sending basic goods to the besieged population of Gaza.

Methodically taking readers from the 2006 Palestinian elections that led to the Islamic movement Hamas taking power up to the brutal assault on Gaza in the summer of ’14 which led to the deaths of thousands, including many women and children.

With Operation Cast Lead, which was kicked off as President George W. Bush was leaving office and Barack Obama was taking office, Israel claimed “self-defense” in the face of Hamas “rocket attacks.” The author argues that an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in 2008 was actually working and that Israel broke the ceasefire. Additionally, he notes, Israel failed in even resolving the conflict between the two parties and didn’t even seem interested in reaching a diplomatic settlement.

The reason for the ruthless attack on Gaza with Cast Lead, where Israel committed war crimes by using white phosphorous on a civilian population, was, according to the author and The New York Times: “to re-establish Israeli deterrence” because “its enemies are less afraid of it than they once were, or should be.”

Sounds like the mentality of an overt, rogue terror state to me.

Finkelstein reminds readers that the Palestinians are under no legal nor moral obligation to desist from using armed force against their oppressors – Israel. However, Finkelstein adds that “nonviolent mass resistance, both in Gaza and by its supporters abroad, still offers the best prospect for ending the illegal siege and occupation.”

If you are tired of the pro-war, pro-Israeli propaganda and want to know what's really going on in Gaza, I highly recommend Method and Madness: The Hidden Story of Israel's Assaults on Gaza.
