BOOK REVIEW: God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything by Christopher Hitchens (Atlantic Books) 2007

More than 10 years have passed since writer and public intellectual Christopher Hitchens (1949-2011) wrote the book God Is Not Great and unfortunately for us it is still relevant today.

How is it possible to deny what Hitchens discusses in his book on the disastrous effect of religions on our society?

Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism no religion is spared. As 2,000 years ago science and general knowledge were very limited, that could explain why religions and gods were the answers to everything. But today when science has been able to resolve thousands of mysteries and continue to do so, it can be difficult to understand why people are still faithful to their religion?

It is even more complicated to understand it, concerning the three Abrahamic religions, as it has been proven that the myth of Jesus was taken from previous pagan religions. And that also numerous part of the Old and New Testaments and the Koran were contradictories. But still, these three religions are more powerful than ever.

Israel is annexing Palestine in the name of its God (which is the same as the Muslims that they are removing). Pope Francis had to apologize for the sexual abuse of minors committed by a priest in Chile but still continue to doubt the facts. And there is not a week with a news of a suicide attack in the name of Allah. Thanks to these three religions journalists are kept busy!

But are religions the real problem? As conversed in Hitchens’ book communism and fascism were not better. Atheist or religious dogmas have the same effect on people, to reduce their freedom such as the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Both are claiming to be a republic, which obviously they are not.

Why are we here? How was the universe created? Is there an afterlife? These questions are perhaps the main reasons why Humanity is willing to embrace so easily dogma. The fear of emptiness and of the unknown make people believe in anything that can make them greater! That could explain why Donald Trump has been elected.

How can humanity finally get away from religious dogma? Hitchens believed that a new Enlightenment, as seen in the past, could be the solution that will bring everyone (male and female) at the same level.

And therefore far from the chosen-one as observed in the religious books and largely promoted by movies.

However, even if continuous technological and scientific progress have helped Humans to evolve more or less in a good direction it will still need time and perseverance.

To clear the mind for this project, it has become necessary to know the enemy, and prepare to fight,” Hitchens wrote in God Is Not Great.

Religions have been warned!
