OKLAHOMA CITY – It’s amazing to think that it was just a few years after the Cuban Revolution that the Rolling Stones were formed in London in 1962 by blues music fanatic and burgeoning musician Brian Jones.

And now, 54 years later, the Rolling Stones have announced that they are planning to perform a groundbreaking concert in Havana, Cuba on Friday, March 25, 2016. It will be the first open air concert in the communist island nation by a British rock band, according to the Rolling Stones’ official website

The band currently consists of vocalist Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, guitarist Ronnie Wood and drummer Charlie Watts. The band is just coming off of a successful Latin American tour where Spanish-speaking audiences from Buenos Aires to Mexico City got to hear classics from "Start Me Up" to "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction."

The Rolling Stones’ press release about this planned concert noted: “We have performed in many special places during our long career but this show in Havana is going to be a landmark event for us, we hope, for all our friends in Cuba too.”

This concert will come just a few days after President Barack Obama and the First Lady travel to Havana, the first time a sitting U.S. president has visited Cuba since Calvin Coolidge (aka “Silent Cal”) visited Cuba in 1928.

Obama is working hard to normalize relations with Cuba, relations which were severed in 1961 after communist Fidel Castro came to power in an armed revolt and he and his brother Raul Castro have been in power ever since, much to the chagrin of many American presidents over the decades.

But it's cool to see that the Rolling Stones have persevered and will have the honor of performing in this amazing Cuba capital city - and for free.
