CD REVIEW: Kyle Park – Make Or Break Me (Winding Road Music)

Last year, Red Dirt Report reviewed two EPs from Texas
singer-songwriter Kyle Park, a rising star on the Lone Star n’ Red Dirt music
scene. The first was simply titled Spring
. The other? Fall 2010. There
are six new songs here while four are from the Spring disc and five are from
the Fall release. We liked ‘em before and said as much in our prior reviews.
And heck, we love Park’s live shows when he comes up to Oklahoma.

And now, a year later, we get the just-released Make Or Break Me. As a fully-realized,
15-track album (his last full album was 2008’s Anywhere In Texas) which Park himself produced, it really works.

And with the new songs, which we’ll focus on, Park’s choices
really work, for the most part. Like, for instance, the exciting title track of
the fiddle-n-pedal-steel-infused “Mistakes I’ll Regret,” Park really shines (and thanks to Lloyd Maines for that pedal steel sound!).
His vocals are warm, with a John Denver-like wistfulness to them.

But Park can flex his muscles, as he does on “I Love Her For
a Million Reasons,” a dopey song that a Roger Creager or a Kevin Fowler would
pull off more convincingly.

Park’s vocals are firm and mixed up front on the bold “What
You’ll Never Know” and work equally well on “Brokenhearted.”

Known these days for UFO sightings, oddly enough, the pleasant
town of Stephenville, Texas gets a shout-out from Park as a place he left – and
returns to on “Leavin’ Stephenville.” And it’s got a bouncy, country beat with
traditional instrumentation and an easygoing, yet rapid-fire delivery from Park
that works so well on this great, new song.

Park is one of those Texas guys whose smart, soulful and personal
songs are finding wide appeal. Plus, he’s constantly touring and when you talk
to him in person, he’s as friendly and down-to-earth as they come.

Make Or Break Me is a great collection of older and newer
Kyle Park songs. Texas Country/Red Dirt fans will definitely enjoy it and more
mainstream country folks are bound to be enchanted by his voice and music. I
certainly am.
