Carrie Fisher is scheduled to speak in OKC on issue of mental illness next month

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Los Angeles Times is reporting Friday afternoon that Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher is in critical condition in a Los Angeles hospital following a “cardiac episode” she suffered while on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Fisher, 60, who became internationally known in 1977 for her role as Princess Leia in the iconic film and the next two films in the original Star Wars trilogy, recently published her autobiography titled Princess Diarist, was scheduled to be in Oklahoma City next month as the featured speaker for the Junior League of Oklahoma City’s Speaker in the City event at the Civic Center Music Hall.

Red Dirt Report, which wishes Fisher a speedy recovery, has reached out to the Junior League of Oklahoma City seeking comment and to learn what they are being told going forward, as news of Fisher’s health condition is updated.

In a press release from September, the Junior League said they invited Fisher to speak on Jan. 18th to address the topic of mental illness and fighting the stigma that often accompanies those afflicted with mental illness.

Said Junior League of Oklahoma City President Sara Sweet back in September: “Ms. Fisher is a strong woman with a  powerful message, and the Junior League of Oklahoma City is proud to welcome her to educate our community on the importance of maintaining good mental health, an issue that affects many Oklahomans.”

Fisher, who also appeared in other well-known films, including Hannah and Her Sisters, The Blues Brothers, and When Harry Met Sally is the daughter of famous Hollywood couple Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher.
