OKLAHOMA CITY — With so many newer, hipper districts popping up in Oklahoma City, many times it feels like other, more established areas are being forgotten. One district is the historic Stockyards, but various merchants and businesses have started to woo customers back by offering various family-friendly events and services that are not found anywhere else.

Old-fashioned candy shop Stockyards Sarsaparilla, 1307 S. Agnew, located in the National Saddlery Building, offers a wide selection of nostalgia candies and even homemade fudge, but what many folks come in for is the nearly 350 different flavors of soda pop they offer, many of which include much-vaunted old-timey root beers, sarsaparillas, cream sodas and more.

“Our goal is to share the nostalgic soda brands and flavors that you can’t find anywhere else,” Jessica Reed, store manager said. “Some of our most popular soda brands are Sioux City, Jackson Hole, Knee High, and Dad’s Sodas.”

With so many different types of soda at Stockyards Sarsaparilla, Reed said that it can be hard for customers to choose their favorite so, wanting their customers to have the opportunity to taste some of their most popular and interesting flavors, they have started holding free and open to the public soda tastings every Saturday.

“It’s a fun family activity in the Historic Stockyards City,” Reed said. “We have had the opportunity to experience our customers feedback on the different sodas we have in stock. It also encourages our customers to come back and bring their friend to try different flavors each week.”

Stockyards Sarsaparilla soda tastings are held every Saturday starting at 1 p.m. Each week, the staff will select three of the popular flavors for patrons to sip on and discover new favorites for themselves. Patrons are also encouraged to enjoy free samples of fresh homemade fudge, flavored Arbuckle Coffees, and shop for Made in Oklahoma products, especially during this remaining holiday season.

“Our soda tastings are a great way for the whole family to take a trip down memory lane,” Reed said. “Each weekend we have seen numerous grandparents and parents alike sharing their favorite sodas and candies from their childhood with the children in their lives. Our goal is to introduce our customers to new soda flavors and remind them of their favorite sodas from their past.”
