An Oklahoma filmmaker will soon make his third trip to San Diego for the Mecca of Geekdom, International Comic-Com.  Kyle Roberts’ film The Bulleteers will be part of the convention’s independent film festival.

“Normally, they’ll have a bunch of shorts but also a few features. Post Human Project was there four years ago. So, this is the third movie in four years that we’ve had there,” said Roberts.

The Post Human Project is Roberts’ feature film about a group of students who develop special abilities. He made the film in the Guthrie area where it caught the attention of Comic-Con four years ago. Since then, Roberts and his cast and crew have been back to San Diego with his short film, Heroes of the Realm.

Roberts is not one to stay idle for long. As soon as he returned from last year’s Comic-Con for Heroes of the Realm, he began making The Bulleteers.

“We made it last year for the Oklahoma City 48 Hour Film competition, similar to Heroes of the Realm which got in the year before. Actually, when we went to Comic-Con last year it was four crazy days and nights. Then my nephew and I when to L.A. for a few days. Then we had a half day in between. Then we did this 48 Hour where we wrote, shot and did The Bulleteers which is now going back this summer.”

Roberts and crew have been on the film festival circuit with The Bulleteers. The short film seems to be gaining praise.

“It won six awards in New York at the Times Square Urban Action Showcase which was fun. Best Actress, Best Short Film, like five different things. Recently, I won Best Director for it at Twister Alley Film Festival in Woodward.”

Roberts is taking the opportunity to invite his fellow Oklahomans to see The Bulleteers before he and the crew head to San Diego and at the same time raise money to help pay for the trip. The San Diego Comic-Con Screening is set for July 21.

“There are still a lot of people who haven’t seen it around here. I figured we would do a screening and try to raise a little bit of money.”

The special screening will be held Thursday, June 29 at The Venue in the Plaza District. The event starts at 6:30 p.m.

“We’re also going to have posters there that was drawn by a local artist Jonathan Koelsch. He signed them, and we had a couple members of our cast and crew sign them as well.”

Even though this is his third trip to Comic-Con promoting his work, Roberts still feels it is a privilege to be part of the convention which attracts sci-fi and fantasy fans by the tens of thousands.

“It was my dream just to go, but to go and be a part of it, see everything and experience stuff, go to VIP parties and all this stuff that you would never think that you would ever really get to do is a lot of fun.”

Roberts’ latest project is The Grave. It is based in 1920s Oklahoma City and features a hero dealing with the underworld. If Roberts’ track record indicates anything, this project could also take the Oklahoma filmmakers places.
