PONCA CITY, Okla. -- Julian Castro, Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, will speak at the winter meeting of the Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes at 9:00 a.m. in Tulsa, Friday, January 8.

Secretary Castro is expected to announce a major funding award from HUD to the Inter Tribal Council to assist homeless Native American veterans.

The funding award comes through Opening Doors, the first federal strategic plan to end homelessness.

The Obama Administration launched the program in 2010.

The HUD program works with partners in every level of government to provide solutions to the problem of veteran homelessness. It invests in and works with private and philanthropic sectors in addition to government sectors to effectively prevent and end homelessness.
