OKLAHOMA CITY – It went under the radar – you didn’t hear the usual blithering saps on cable television talking about it – but it should have been discussed at length and in a serious manner, since the survival of the planet depends on it.

I’m talking about the United States decision, a few weeks ago, to block a global document aimed at ridding the world of nuclear weapons, something the Republic of the Marshall Islands was working on this past year, but was unfortunately stopped by the courts in an unfair manner.

As the Associated Press reported on May 22nd: “ The now-failed final document of a landmark treaty review conference had called on the U.N. secretary-general to convene the Middle East conference no later than March 2016, regardless of whether Israel and its neighbors agree on an agenda.

Israel is not a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has never publicly declared what is widely considered to be an extensive nuclear weapons program. A conference might force Israel to acknowledge it. Since adopting a final document requires consensus, the rejection by the United States, backed by Britain and Canada, means the entire blueprint for global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation for the next five years has been blocked after four weeks of negotiations. The next treaty review conference is in 2020.”

Seems strange for an administration led by a president who is also a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Commenting on this unfortunate development is American journalist Chris Floyd, who wrote: “Of course, Obama’s action was not merely a benevolent service for Israel. For not only does the United States want to keep Israel as its nuclear-armed crusader fortress in the Middle East — it also has no intention whatsoever of eliminating its own nuclear arsenal.  This will never happen, no matter which faction of militarist courtiers happens to wrap their candidate in the imperial purple for a time in 2016 or 2020 or 2024, etc.  So any undermining of genuine efforts toward nuclear disarmament also serves America’s bipartisan agenda of unipolar domination of world affairs.”

We are at a very, very dangerous moment in world history. With America provoking both Russia (over Ukraine and nukes in Crimea) and China (over the South China Sea), the threat of global thermonuclear war is reaching perilous levels.

As we have noted before, nuclear disarmament is critical for the future of the planet.
