OKLAHOMA CITY -- Asking voters in Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District to "send a progressive to Washington," Democrat candidate Tom Guild is officially announcing this week that he will be entering the race against freshman Republican Congressman James Lankford.

Guild, of Edmond, said in a press release Wednesday, "Many people have lost faith in our government. The middle class and the working poor are under attack and it is becoming more difficult to achieve the American Dream," Guild said. "The people of Oklahoma, and of our great country, deserve better representation and that is why I am running for office."

In an article in the December 2011 issue of the Gayly newspaper, Guild explained that while he understands that "(s)ome claim that government has failed to deliver a good quality of life for our people," that from a young age he was "a product of government support." He noted that his biological parents abandoned him while "living off government commodities." He also went on to explain that ultimately he was adopted and grew up utilizing the Tulsa YMCA and joining Cub Scouts. He said his father, Dr. Carl Guild, was a "big supporter of public education" and that his adoptive father "inspired me to get my doctorate."

"I am running for Congress to help ensure that our children get a good education, can safely rise above difficult circumstances, have access to good jobs, and are equipped with the strength to persevere, and to achieve their American Dream," Guild said in Gayly.

Added Guild: "It is time to restore confidence in our government. It is time to go to work to promote and protect policies that make people's lives better, particularly the great American middle class."

On his campaign website, Guild is critical of Lankford, noting that he is "mean spirited" for wanting to prohibit automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. to parents who are "undocumented workers."

Guild is disappointed in Lankford's support to "kill Medicare and alter Social Security." Trying to get the attention of senior citizens, Guild says that it is "unfair to ask seniors to sacrifice" while Lankford wants to extend the Bush tax cuts for families making more than $250,000 a year.

He also says Lankford "opposes requiring groups that run political ads from disclosing their donors."

And regarding the U.S. military, Guild criticized Lankford for opposing the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, a repeal supported by the top brass. Said Guild: "We need to welcome everyone into the American family and encourage and show appreciation for those who choose to risk their lives in the service of our country."

Guild explains that he will make his official announcement tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. at Stoneway Office Center in Oklahoma City and that more information on his candidacy can be found at
