OKLAHOMA CITY – The Shawnee Wolves baseball team is ranked No. 1 nationally by two ranking services—MaxPreps and USA Today.

The Wolves are 30-0 this year and are currently riding a 42-game winning streak dating to last year. Shawnee has won the last two Class 5A state baseball championships under coach Todd Boyer.

Boyer has been at the helm at Shawnee High School for the past 11 years and said being ranked atop the national polls is an honor.

“It’s nice for our kids to be recognized for all of their hard work and success that they are having,” Boyer said.

The Wolves, which had been No. 2 in both polls, moved to No. 1 because the previous top team, Buchanan (Clovis, Calif.), lost its first game, 11-7, to Sunrise Mountain (Peoria, Ariz.) last weekend. The Bears dropped to fourth in both polls.

Owasso, a Class 6A power, is also ranked eighth in the USA Today Super 25 Expert Rankings, but No. 15 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 poll. The 23-2 Rams dropped from No. 8 in the MaxPreps poll after splitting games with Bixby last weekend.

Owasso has won 13 state baseball championships and 10 in the last 18 years. The Rams are seeking another 6A title since they lost to Edmond Memorial in last year’s quarterfinals.

The state playoffs will begin in two weeks, and Boyer knows his Wolves must stay focused and can’t get a big head being atop the polls.

“We will have to continue to get good starting pitching, and our offense will also have to continue getting timely hits,” he said. “We are well aware that to make another run at a State Title you have to play well, catch a break and you must stay healthy.”

Shawnee pitcher Tanner Sparks has been phenomenal on the mound with a 9-0 record, 61 strikeouts and a 0.95 ERA this year. The senior also leads the Wolves with 10 home runs and 64 RBI and has a .536 batting average.

Fellow senior Jake Taylor leads Shawnee with 53 hits (.552 batting average) and 17 doubles. He also has 6 homers and 49 RBI.
