OKLAHOMA CITY — The Fresh Paint Performance Lab’s mission is to help cultivate and produce new local works through intensive workshopping with the artist and having their tools and resources, from providing a space and musicians to helping with dancers and tech, all at their beck and call and all in the name of producing “the best vision of the work possible”

The new musical Gallow Walkers, written by Michael Todd and described as a “horror folk opera” has been a part of this program and is ready for its first one night only run-through this Thursday night. Staged with the aesthetics of a silent film, Fresh Paint artistic director Chelcy Harrell said the musical will explore deep themes such as the “dark side of love.”

“We did a workshop of some of Todd’s music last year and he kind of stuck out to us, totally in alignment with our mission of doing these new, experimental works,” Harrell said. “The way that we kind of formed to begin with was to provide a place for people with a crazy idea in the back of their heads but they don’t know how to make it work. We want to be the type of company that says if you want to do a live silent film, let’s do it! You wanna do a piece where people are cutting up a watermelon and singing Mozart, let’s do it!”

Gallow Walkers is, ostensibly, the story of the twisted love affair between a werewolf hangman and a vampire bordello singer. It is performed with a four-piece band who will be singing the parts of the characters, and, per the silent movie theme, there will be projections and subtitles. The one night only performance of this show will take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 31st at Oklahoma Contemporary, 3000 General Pershing Blvd. Admission is a suggested donation of $10.

“At Fresh Paint you’re always going to see something different, something you’re not used to, something that might make you uncomfortable—in a good way or maybe even a bad way—but regardless, it’s not going to be a cookie cutter, commercial product that you might see on some of the big stages,” Harrell said. “It’s going to be something new and fresh that you’ve probably never seen before and it might fail and it might not fail, but there’s always that excitement in being part of something like this in its very early stages.”
