EDMOND, OKla. - John Sweeney is no stranger to the hospitality industry. With 17 years of experience in the corporate hotel development business, he's known for a long time that he wanted to own his own restaurant and bar. He's just been waiting for the right moment.

His moment has come.

Sweeney McGann's is the newest addition to downtown Edmond. Located in the former Vin Dolce/Grille 16 space at 16 S. Broadway, Sweeney had his eye on the property for a couple of years, and when Grille 16 closed its doors January 1, Sweeney and his former neighbor and longtime business partner Ryan McGann made their move. They purchased the kitchen equipment at auction and spent the next six months ironing out the details of their burgeoning business.

“I actually wrote the business plan for this in 2010,” said Sweeney. Changes in the economy led Sweeney to postpone his plans and focus on his other business ventures. Until now.

Sweeney's dream finally came to fruition on Tuesday, May 27, when Sweeney McGann's opened their doors. A newly built 3-sided bar takes up roughly half of the square footage of the dining area. Four big screen projection TVs and a large flat screen line the walls for a perfect view of the game no matter where you're seated.

If Sweeney McGann's is suffering growing pains, I haven't seen evidence of it yet. The service has been optimal each time I visited, especially when “Johnny Mohawk” has been behind the bar or making the rounds as manager. The Hendrick's Gin Fizz is outstanding, and the muddled cucumber is a lovely touch. They also make a nice Tito's dirty martini, complete with a trio of blue cheese stuffed olives.

The pub fare is high-quality and freshly made. The menu includes items such as burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, chicken and waffles, and appetizers such as chips and salsa, queso, nachos, and southwest egg rolls. In the coming weeks, Sweeney will be adding items such as bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, potato and leek soup, and salads to their menu to round out their concept.

The fish and chips is excellent and the waffle fries are light and crisp, easily the best I've ever had. The chicken and waffles is the perfect mix of sweet and salty, with the chicken nicely seasoned and crisp, with just the right amount of kick to offset the sweetness of the syrup. My beau ordered the ranch hand burger, and I barely got in a bite before it was gone, because it was just that good. There wasn't so much as a crumb left on his plate. Everything I've ordered so far has been extremely well executed, and I have no complaints. I felt the queso was a little heavy, but that's largely a matter of personal taste, and the flavors were still nice.

Sweeney has traveled extensively, pulling unique flavors and cuisine from different areas. Based on what I've seen so far, he knows his stuff. The combination of fresh food, specialty drinks, service, and welcoming atmosphere makes Sweeney McGann's a great addition to Edmond. The city has relatively few non-smoking bars that are open late. The fact that the owners themselves are often on hand to make you feel welcome, or that a member of the staff may take a seat at the piano and belt out a tune during halftime makes Sweeney McGann's stand out from its corporate-owned counterparts.

The family-owned atmosphere alone makes it worth the trip, and the rest will make you want to return for the next big game or a night out with friends.
