OKLAHOMA CITY -- Nestled in an unanticipated location on Guernsey Avenue in the resurrected 23rd Street UpTown, Guernsey Park is quickly making a name for itself within the “foodie” community of Oklahoma City.

The restaurant itself is a contemporary renovation of a house built in 1918 which creates a cozy environment with a modern appeal. The split-level architecture of the restaurant allows dining on three separate levels, with each level creating its own unique experience.

As I entered the restaurant on Level 2 my eyes were greeted with white leather, white lighting, and a simple yet artful gray chevron wall. The chic bar was tucked comfortably in the corner which gave it an inviting yet unassuming appeal. Since the restaurant was fairly busy for a Tuesday evening my husband and I opted for the lower Level 1 to have a more intimate meal together.

We were seated at a fantastic table next to a large window with tear-drop lighting above our heads, and a beautifully hand-painted rosebud tree on the North wall behind the two sushi chefs who were busy diligently creating perfectly crafted rolls. Enticed by the chefs’ presence, we selected a Tempura Shrimp roll as an appetizer, which we devoured in minutes. The roll was light with a slight spice from the paper thin jalapenos that garnished the plate.

As I began studying the Asian-fusion menu, I was impressed by how it maintained simplicity despite its eclectic nature. The majority of ingredients listed were uncommon for most local Oklahoma eateries, however the combination of spices would be inherently pleasing to the even the most finicky of palates.

After discussing which items we would like to “share” we ordered the Ginger Chicken and the Korean Cowboy. The Ginger Chicken was delightful; two airline chicken breasts placed artfully atop a generous mound of fluffy white rice, and the Moroccan green beans cooked tenderly with stewed tomatoes in a ginger sauce hidden beneath the rice created a beautiful plate presentation. The chicken was cooked excellently, and the thin crisped skin provided a familiar texture to an unusual dish.

Saving the best for last, The Korean Cowboy…Yee Haw! This entree was technically not “mine” however I kept finding my fork reaching for the juicy 12 oz. rib eye on my husband’s plate. I was impressed with the steak’s hot pink center - cooked evenly throughout- and the burst of savory flavors from the bulgogi ketchup butter and kimchi slaw were perfect compliments to the steak. The GP fries were crisp and hot, but on the smaller side, as if we may have received the end of the batch.

The entire experience exceeded our expectations, and even though it appeared our server had some tables on the upper level our service did not suffer at all. There were two managers on duty who visited our table throughout our dinner, ensuring our drinks were filled, plates were cleared, etc. Guernsey Park is a place where one could impress with a business lunch, intimate date, or even a large family dinner, it is not simply a restaurant in Oklahoma City, it is a destination.
