OKLAHOMA CITY – Approximately a dozen people gathered outside of Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford’s Oklahoma City office Wednesday to demand that Congress launch an independent investigation and appoint a special prosecutor after President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday.

The gathering, which was originally planned to be a form of Cacerolazo, a protest that consists of a group of people making noise by banging pots, pans and utensils that is popular in Latin American countries. Instead, the participants gathered outside of Lankford’s downtown office, displaying signs and drawing messages on the sidewalk with chalk.

For Bowman Dominque of Oklahoma City, a member of Indivisible, the gathering was about sending a message to leaders.

“Sen. Lankford said that the people deserve an explanation for the firing of Comey, and he’s the only Republican who spoke up,” Dominque said. “The reasons [Trump] gave made no sense. We are here to demand an independent investigator. The American people deserve it.”

On Wednesday, Trump defended his actions by saying FBI Director Comey “wasn’t doing a good job,” but critics claim the President’s actions interfere in the investigation Comey was leading into allegations that the Trump campaign and Russia were working together. After Comey’s dismissal, Democrats rushed to call for the appointment of a special prosecutor to lead the investigation.

Republican leadership, including Lankford, also spoke out against the move to remove the FBI director in the middle of an investigation. But others, including Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) said three investigations were currently underway in the Senate, the House and through the FBI.

"Let's get them done, let's see them through, let's go wherever the facts may lead," he said Wednesday in an interview with Fox News.

In Oklahoma City, however, citizens gathered to the last-minute protest to share their thoughts and urge Lankford to call for a special investigation.

“I’m disgusted that [Trump] would fire Comey,” said Beth Hurley of Oklahoma City. “It’s classless. Everything with the Trump presidency is classless.”

Beth Hurley of Oklahoma City was a part of a small gathering outside of Sen. James Langford's office Wednesday night.

Nationally, more than 500 people protested outside of the White House Wednesday in action organized by, Indivisible, Working Families Party, Americans Against Trump, Bend the Arc Jewish Action, the People for the American Way (PFAW), CREDO, Resist With Me, Alliance for Quality Education, Action Alliance, CAP Action, Every Voice, Free Speech for People, the Center for Popular Democracy, Strong Women Action Network, Women’s March on Washington, Human Rights Campaign, Common Defense and other groups.

“We now face a constitutional crisis,” said Campaign Director Jo Comerford in a news release Wednesday. “Donald Trump just fired the one man in America who was leading the most thorough and long-lasting investigation of Donald Trump. There now is no question that we need an independent commission established immediately to ensure that there is a fair, non-partisan and independent investigation into Trump, his administration and his associates.” petitions calling for an independent investigation and/or a special prosecutor have more than 900,000 signatures, including more than 500,000 on this petition calling for a House investigation into Trump/Russia.

“Members of Congress—of both parties—who care about the security of our democracy and the well-being of our nation must not waste another second in calling for a full, bi-partisan, independent investigation to look into Russia’s known hacking of the 2016 U.S. election to benefit Donald Trump, as well as into Donald Trump and his associates’ potential collusion with Russia,” said Comerford. “Nothing short of the integrity and fate of our democracy is on the line.”
