NORMAN, Okla. -- Michael Phillip Wright died September 16, 2009, consequent to a stroke. Born in Norman, Oklahoma, on March 10, 1947, Mike graduated from Grant High School in Oklahoma City in 1965. After graduation, Mike moved back to Norman and was accepted as a National Merit Scholar at OU. He arrived just in time to participate in the student movements of the day. Michael was active in support of the African American civil rights movement and in opposition to the American involvement in Vietnam.

He was President of the local chapter of Students for a Democratic Society and active in the OU Committee to end the Vietnam War. Mike received an undergraduate degree which emphasized Political Science and a M. A. Degree in Sociology. In his graduate school years Mike developed an intense interest in bluegrass, folk and classical music. He played the violin and mandolin and received a great deal of satisfaction from his music and his relations with other musicians.

Mike later developed a social science and market research firm. His work has been published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, AIDS Education and Prevention and the proceedings from the Oklahoma Symposium on Artificial Intelligence, among others. Mike continued to be interested and active in music and socially relevant research until his death.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, Charles William and Nannina B. Wright and is survived by his brother Charles, nephew Morgan, and two grand nieces, Marissa and Mallory, all of Norman. A memorial service and reception in Mike’s honor will be held on September 26, 2009, at 2:00 P.M. at the Norman Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1309 W. Boyd.
