The clouds have returned over our corner of the Sooner State and yet winter never seemed to arrive. Make of that what you will.

And speaking of weather and climate we see U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe – the self-proclaimed “Jesus guy” – a leading critic of man-made global warming theories, has just released a book titled The Greatest Hoax: How the Global Warming Conspiracy Threatens Your Future. We obviously have not read it yet but we suspect Al Gore is ready to have his own meltdown over it.

Many dog breeders in Oklahoma have been ignoring the rules, expecting legislators to get rid of the board all together.

In Sunday’s edition of The Oklahoman, the group, featured a full-page ad which reads: “Pedigreed – Oklahoma is number two in the nation for puppy mills.” This is a response to State Rep. Phil Richardson (R-Minco) and his HB 2921which would wipe out the newly created Oklahoma State Board of Commercial Pet Breeders.

Richardson, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, explained to the Tulsa World last week that would move the authority to regulate state pet breeders from the state veterinary board to the state’s Agriculture Department. Apparently not enough pet breeders are coming forward to be licensed – 950 are needed to keep the agency going – with less than 300 doing so. Now I get why the activists seeking to save the board used the term “pedigreed.”

So, what about the pet breeders in the meantime? Who is regulating them while the wheels of government creak along in the interim? No one. The black market continues and many animals are being hurt in the process.

This week we will hear more about the devisive “Personhood” bill being pushed by State Sen. Brian Crain (R-Tulsa). We posted a press release from Oklahomans Against the Personhood Act which notes that a rally will be held at the Capitol on Tuesday at noon. And another group, the pro-life Abolitionist Society, will hold a press conference on Thursday pushing for an Oklahoma Personhood Amendment ballot initiative to be put on the ballot in November. A "personhood" amendment vote failed in Mississippi last fall.

We direct you to an editorial in The Oklahoman on Saturday, written by Dr. Eli Reshef headlined "Proposed personhood legislation in Oklahoma has potential unintended consequences." Reshef makes some great points - including that if the act doesn't have teeth, it's as effective as "laws" in Oklahoma against adultery, blasphemy and profanity. Adds Reshef: "(B)y denying thousands of Oklahomans the right to conceive by (in vitro fertilization) or the right for family planning, they are clearly anti-reproduction, anti-family and anti-life no matter where one stands on the abortion issue."

And, as we have noted, the Catholic Church insists on jumping in the middle of the issue with Pope Benedict XVI telling infertile couples this past week to "shun IVF" and for Catholics to "refrain from trying to conceive through any method other than conjugal relations."
