Will local pastor with alleged anti-gay views and Chamber backing run against Ward 2 progressive Ed Shadid?

OKLAHOMA CITY – OkieLeaks received a very interesting tip earlier today regarding the upcoming city council race in Oklahoma City’s Ward 2.

Our source informed us that over the weekend a well-known, well-funded, right-wing, Chamber of Commerce-linked polling firm used live callers to call voters in Ward 2 to see if they would be interested in supporting a city council candidate. The candidate, people were told, was a “man of God,”  of high-moral standing and characterand set to run against Ward 2 Councilman Dr. Ed Shadid,

It was the forward-thinking, fair-minded Shadid who ran against the elitist, "pot-smoking mayor" Mick Cornett last spring.

The potential Ward 2 candidate the OkieLeaker was referring to was Dr. Major Lewis Jemison, the senior pastor of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, located at 5700 N. Kelley Avenue.

The source who contacted OkieLeaks said they are familiar with Jemison and have attended the socially-conservative church in the past. The last time they attended St. John MBC, they said they came away shocked by the things they heard Jemison spew from the pulpit regarding gays and lesbians. The source added that even their children were shocked by what was said within the church walls.

The OkieLeaker referred to Jemison’s bombastic sermonizing as “vile, hateful venom” about homosexuality and recalls Jemison referring to “a dirty man laying with a dirty man and a dirty woman laying with a dirty woman.”

Red Dirt Report talked to a well-informed source close to Oklahoma City politics and we were told that Jemison was handpicked by the Chamber to get the African-American vote and someone who will likely side with downtown interests over the interests and needs of the entirety of Oklahoma City, particularly if a MAPS 4 is proposed.

Our political source speculated that a lot of money must have been spent on consulting and polling to see what kind of traction Jemison may get as they prepare to try and boot Shadid off the City Council next spring.

And when told about what the OkieLeaker had to say about Jemison and his alleged anti-gay statements within his church, our source said that if Jemison was elected to the council, you would “have the most anti-gay council member.”

From our vantage point, it would appear that a "dark money" group like Catalyst Oklahoma is testing the waters to see if Jemison will have what it takes to oust Shadid once and for all, particularly as the bunco artists and flim-flammers at The Fat City Times-Truncheon (aka The Oklahoman) seek to help the Tall Building Crowd fleece the good citizens of Oklahoma City via the proposed Convention Center hotel which will keep the folks on the hook as the TBC'ers make out like bandits. If this article is any evidence, the convention center hotel (which Shadid opposes) is a foregone conclusion.

Red Dirt Report will continue to monitor this story as it develops.
