OKLAHOMA CITY –  “This is just freaky to me,” a Canadian friend told me as they read the headlines coming out of Ottawa, Ontario today that the seat of Canada’s government, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, was under attack as a lone shooter - and possibly more -  shot a guard at the National War Memorial, near that nation’s Parliament building. The shooting caused Canada's government to scramble and go into lockdown mode.

As the CBC reported this morning: “MPs and other witnesses reported several shots fired inside Parliament and a gunman has been confirmed dead inside the building. The soldier’s condition is not known at this time.”

However, conflicting reports are rolling in, as CNN reports “that there could be multiple shooters and shooting incidents in the capital.” MP Tony Clement tweeted that he heard “at least 30 shots” and took cover with parliamentarian colleagues. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was “secure,” CNN reported, noting that Parliament was on “lockdown.”

A senior U.S. official added that there is “no indication that the shooter has ties to violent Islamic extremism.”

In the meantime, NORAD North Bay is on high alert and “closed,” according to Canada’s Bay Today.

This harrowing account was also shared in Bay Today: "Scott Walsh says he was working in a manhole near the East Block building, between the memorial and the Centre Block, when he heard two gunshots echo down the street.

Walsh says in the ensuing panic people around him started screaming, including a woman pushing a child in a stroller.

He said she started to run, so he went to help her. That's when he saw a man with long black hair, his face covered by a white scarf with decals on it and wearing a black jacket.

"He had a double-barrelled shotgun, he was about five feet from me, and he ran right beside us, ran past the woman with the stroller and child," he said. "The gunman then hijacked a dark car at gunpoint", he said, "and drove it up towards the Peace Tower."

Sync blogger Loren Coleman, at Twilight Language, wrote that this shooting incident “follows an incident on Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, when 25-year-old Martin Couture-Rouleau ran over two soldiers. Coutre-Rouleau was briefly detained at a Canadian airport in July 2013 when he sought to fly to Turkey. Police did not have enough evidence to charge him with seeking to join a terrorist group abroad and released him.”

Coleman also noted that this shooting incident and the earlier attack appear to be “a copycat of the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in London in May 2013. Rigby was run over by two Muslim converts before being stabbed and hacked to death.”
