All the dirt, news, culture and commentary for Oklahoma's second century.

About Red Dirt Report

OUR HISTORY

Andrew W. Griffin after working as a journalist for over twenty years for a variety of newspapers decided to start Red Dirt Report to provide independent news for Oklahomans. Red Dirt Report was launched on July 4, 2007 as an independent news website covering all manners of news, culture, entertainment and lifestyle stories that affect and interest Oklahoma readers and readers outside of our state. Our mission is to educate, promote civic engagement and discourse on public policy, government and politics. Our experienced journalists provide balanced, in-depth coverage of news stories that affect Oklahomans. Our opinion and editorial stories come from a wide range of political viewpoints. We carry out our mission by reporting, writing and posting news and information.  We seek out marginalized news, people, groups and communities that do not receive mainstream news coverage.  We welcome all points of views, opinions and editorials.  We also seek to provide uplifting and positive stories about the Oklahoma people and communities that make this a great state.

RUSTY RED DIRT

Rusty Red Dirt has been our mascot since the launch of Red Dirt Report. He reminds us of great Oklahomans like Will Rogers, who called politics "the best show in the world" and Woody Guthrie, who fought fascism with his guitar and pen.  Rusty also fights fascism with his typewriter and pen.  His face can be seen in our logo.  He makes appearances in "Fables of the 46" cartoon strip.  He annually gives out his "Rusty's Favorites" awards to local businesses and towns.  His favorite stories are daily featured in our "Rusty's Must Reads" section.  Rusty also has a theme song:

"That trusty Rusty Red Dirt is roping in the news, he's writing on the range to get the dirt for you!"

OUR FUNDING

With five corporations owning 80% of the media outlets in the United States, we believe it is crucial for independent media to fill the gap in news coverage and viewpoints.  You can support independent media outlets by reading and sharing stories and through crowd funding and advertising.  Red Dirt Report operates on a very small budget each year.  We are supported through advertisers, reader gifts, and paid reviews.  Our writers make $25 to $100 per story.  We have one full-time employee.  Andrew Griffin donates his time and talent to run Red Dirt Report.

RUSTY MENTORS

Red Dirt Report is committed to encouraging young journalists through our Junior Red Dirt Reporter Mentor and Scholarship Program. Students in high school and undergraduates in college can submit writing samples and a personal statement to qualify for the program. Students in the program will be listed on the website as Junior Red Dirt Reporters. Students in the program will work with the Red Dirt Report staff to develop and write stories. Red Dirt Report staff will work with students in the program to develop their journalism skills. Scholarship recipients are selected from the program each year on December 15.

RUSTY SPEAKS OUT

We are committed to free speech and the First Amendment. We will write about whatever we please. In the words of the late, martyred abolitionist and newspaper publisher, Elijah P. Lovejoy:

“But, gentlemen, as long as I am an American citizen, and as long as American blood runs in these veins, I shall hold myself at liberty to speak, to write, to publish whatever I please on any subject – being amenable to the laws of my country for the same.”
