NORMAN, Okla. – Singer-songwriter Fiona Apple was on
her way east towards Houston, Texas for her concert there, scheduled for later
today, when they suddenly approached a border check on Interstate 10 in far west Texas.
Like so many entertainers before her, Fiona and her posse found themselves in notorious Hudspeth County,
and we say notorious because stars like Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg make
headlines when they’re busted for drug possession in that particular county,
located next to the Mexican border.
And the waif-like Fiona Apple was no different from Willie and Snoop. Hashish and pot were found and she was hauled off to jail.
For fans here in Oklahoma, Apple, 35, was scheduled to perform
at the WinStar World Casino in Thackerville on Saturday night at 8 p.m. Curious
to learn if the concert, which includes opening act Blake Mills, was still
scheduled, Red Dirt Report spoke with
Shaundra North Blundell, vice-president of media relations for Koch
Communications, and she told us that as of late Thursday, the concert was still
scheduled to take place.
TMZ reported
on Fiona Apple’s drug bust, reporting: “Fiona Apple ‘freely admitted’ the hash
and the weed on her tour bus belonged to her when cops discovered the drugs (Wednesday)
night, so says the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office.”
The report continues, saying drug-sniffing dogs “detected
the presence of narcotics in a blue backpack,” which turned out to contain .01
pounds of weed and .01 pounds of hash. Possession of any amount of hashish is a
felony in Texas, while pot possession of less than 2 ounces is a Class B
misdemeanor.
After Apple allegedly admitted that the drugs
belonged to her, she was arrested and placed in the Hudspeth County Jail in
Sierra Blanca, spending the night in jail and was later released on $10,000
bond. The Houston Chronicle reported her Thursday night gig at the Bayou Music
Center had been scheduled to take place, which means in all likelihood she will
perform in Thackerville on Saturday night as scheduled.
Fiona Apple known for songs like "Shadowboxer" and - ironically - "Criminal," is considered a darling of hipster
critics and is also seen as an alt-pop oddball, acting erratically on stage and
releasing albums with insufferably long titles. Her latest, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of
the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do,
actually hit number three on the charts earlier this year and is considered one
of her best albums. Read more about it here.
